Chapter Ten

“Wow, these are lofts?” Monica asked, looking at the run-down buildings.

“Yeah, and they aren’t cheap,” Nathan said, parking his truck on the street. “There are only four units in the main building. The others in the surrounding buildings are much smaller, but no less expensive.”

“How do you get in?”

“Just ring the bell,” Nathan said as he led her up to the door and pressed a big red button.

A grouchy voice came crackling through the intercom. “Who is it?”

“This is Sheriff Thomas. I’m looking for Mason Bridges,” Nathan said into the little grated square.

There was a click, and then another, but no one buzzed to open the door. However, a sound like someone moving heavy machinery came closer to where they were standing on the stoop. Monica took a careful step back, but Nathan remained where he was. All of a sudden, there was a clang, click, clang just before a door opened to their right that led to a freight elevator door. Inside was a tall, skinny blond man wearing a T-shirt with an extreme V-neck that exposed almost his entire chest. His sweatpants were covered with paint splatter.

“Can I help you?” he asked them gruffly, as if this was the biggest bother of his life.

“Mason Bridges? I’m Sheriff Thomas. This is—”

“You can talk to my lawyer. I didn’t have anything to do with it,” Mason snapped, narrowing his eyes.

“To do with what?” Nathan asked as he stepped closer.

“With Priscilla. News travels fast.” Mason cleared his throat. “Look, I’ve had nothing but grief since the day I met her. And even after I promised I’d never go near her again, I still get hassled because I told the truth. That she was a violent woman.” He shook his head. “The double standard is breathtaking. If I ever so much as called her names, I’d be considered verbally abusive. But she can hit me in the face because she’s delusional, and I’m the bad guy.”

“Mr. Bridges, I still need to talk to you. We can either talk here, or we can go down to the station,” Nathan said firmly. “Personally, I’d think being interviewed by the police in the comfort of my own home was the better option.”

“I’m not saying anything until my lawyer shows up,” Mason said defiantly, lifting his chin and smirking.

It didn’t take long for him to change his tune once he was being yanked out of the back of a squad car with handcuffs on and practically dragged into the police station. As soon as his backside hit the chair in the interrogation room, he was ready to tell the sheriff anything he wanted to know, lawyer or no lawyer.

“You can wait until your lawyer arrives, Mason,” Nathan said pleasantly while Monica watched from the observation room behind the pane of mirrored glass. “I think you said he’s in Portland. That should take him only about three hours to get here.”

“Look, I didn’t have anything to do with Priscilla’s murder. I swear it,” Mason said. Monica could see now that he was very handsome, with his tanned face and short blond hair.
